Study finds barriers to turning residents into citizens
2005/06/13
CHICAGO - Nearly two out of three legal immigrants in Illinois say they want to become U.S. citizens, but language, financial and education barriers make the process difficult and sometimes unobtainable, according to a study released Monday. 'It's important that these numbers are understood and these numbers are widely distributed,' said Rep. Luis Gutierrez, D-Ill. 'The debate on immigration has never been more important.'

Many countries restrict research into stem cells
2005/06/06
Restrictions on human embryonic stem-cell research in other countries may make America seem like a hospitable spot for this revolutionary new era in medicine, according to experts on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. Canada, for instance, is a-mong the countries that have criminalized the cloning of hu-man embryos to obtain stem cells. Scientists who violate the law can be jailed for 10 years and fined $500,000. 'Yes, it's true,' said Rosario Isasi, an attorney who works on medical ethics issues at the University of Montreal. 'You bet that with these harsh sanctions scientists are complying.'

Europe: Is the dream falling apart?
2005/05/30
It was supposed to be a new way for nations to live and work together. It’s been successful beyond its wildest dreams. But if France votes No tomorrow it may spell the end of the EU … or perhaps a revival of the ideals that started the adventure in the first place. Iain Macwhirter reports There is understandable gloom and foreboding this weekend over the future of the European project. If France and the Netherlands vote “No” to the new constitution, it will likely start a rejectionist domino effect that will knock on through Denmark, Ireland and Poland. Europe could be flattened for a generation.

Plenty of laughs and energy in 'Polish Joke'
2005/05/23
Some plays are noticed for their moments rather than the totality of the work. They may not be art or particularly compelling, but they are not easily forgotten. Such is the case with 'Polish Joke,' the David Ives comedy that is receiving a well-acted production from Bialystock & Bloom. The show opened Friday night.

John Paul could be beatified in Poland
2005/05/16
AP - Pope Benedict XVI might be able to beatify John Paul II in a ceremony in Poland, the head of the Vatican's saint-making office says, a day after the pontiff gave his predecessor a headstart on the road toward sainthood. 'It's clear that it's possible,' Cardinal Jose Saraiva Martins said on Italian state TV, which asked if he thought Benedict might some day lead the beatification should procedures for that last formal step before sainthood are completed in the present pope's papacy.

Huge march at Auschwitz death camp to remember victims of Holocaust
2005/05/09
WARSAW (AFP) - Thousands of people from some 50 countries have begun converging on southern Poland to take part Thursday in a march in memory of Holocaust victims at Auschwitz-Birkenau, the most grimly efficient of Nazi German death camps. 'This year's March of the Living will be the largest ever, with 18,000 to 20,000 people coming to Auschwitz on May 5, which is Holocaust Remembrance Day,' the event's director Aaron Tamir told reporters in Warsaw last week.

A Mass From a Polish Orchestra, Seeming Perfectly Timed
2005/05/02
Amid the annual parade of world-class orchestras passing through New York, a visit by the Wroclaw Philharmonic of Poland could easily have been overlooked - and to some extent it was, in a sparsely attended concert at Alice Tully Hall on Sunday afternoon. But on Saturday evening, partly through an accident of timing, the orchestra played to a nearly full house in St. Patrick's Cathedral.

Poland hails new Pope
2005/04/25
Church bells have rung out around Poland as the native land of the late Pope John Paul II welcomed his successor, German Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, as 'a good choice' who would continue the work of Poland's beloved and revered pontiff. At Wawel Cathedral in Krakow, where John Paul II spent 40 years of his life, the Zygmunt bell, which is only rung to mark events of great significance to Poland, rang out on the announcement of Cardinal Ratzinger's election. The same bell also rang when Krakow's then cardinal, Karol Wojtyla, was elected to the papacy in 1978, and when he died as Pope John Paul II on April 2.

Israelis lining up for Polish citizenship
2005/04/18
TEL AVIV -- Nestled in a quiet residential neighborhood, the Polish Embassy building has become a site of pilgrimage for a growing tide of Israelis who are seeking to reclaim what under Polish law is their birthright. Almost a year after Poland became part of the European Union last May, thousands of Israelis are eyeing the homeland of their parents and grandparents as a ticket to sharing in the prosperity of the new Europe. Some just want the convenience of traveling on the Continent as an EU citizen. But others covet the economic and legal benefits to help them build careers and businesses.

Pope John Paul II buried in Vatican crypt
2005/04/11
VATICAN CITY (CNN) -- Pope John Paul II was buried Friday in a crypt under St. Peter's Basilica after a funeral Mass that millions of people around the world watched. Guests attending the elaborate open-air service in St. Peter's Square cheered and applauded, many chanting 'Santo, Santo' -- a call for John Paul to be canonized. Some pilgrims who came from the pope's homeland waved Polish flags. 'Today, we bury his remains in the earth as a seed of immortality -- our hearts are full of sadness, yet at the same time of joyful hope and profound gratitude,' Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger said in the homily during the Mass.
